Back in Karate at age 54

Not as sore as I thought I would be.  That is a good thing.

I had tried to get back into regular workouts at my karate school (dojo) several times over the years and I needed to get my blood pressure under control.  I just didn’t know it at the time.  When I would try to start, even one workout made me “pay” for days.

I try to have at least one salad as a meal per day.  I think that is quieting my body inflammation in general.  This is a “must” for doing karate at my age.

Just about daily:

walking 8000-10,000 steps

crunches

bicycle rides

planks

push-ups from the knees and a few full push-ups……on the fists with wrists straight, arms tight like I am squeezing a grape in my armpit.

weekly Chiropractic care

This is stuff I have been doing for a while and I think it has prepared me to return to the dojo.  I like the dynamic on the mat.  Encouraging.  It feels good to work out with a group.  Karate; a mind and body experience!

  1. Way to go Dr. Barnes! It’s incredible to hear of an older person (for lack of better words…you aren’t “old”) caring for his health and trying something like karate! I’ve always been fascinated with the discipline and movements of karate. I hope to try kickboxing for cardio + abs. We’ll see…

  2. How wonderful that you are finding time for something you enjoy that is healthy and engaging. I took Tae Kwon Do to brown belt when I was younger and I loved it. I did not try out for black belt at 16 as I had a friend come back from trying out with a broken nose which put me off. I truly did love the practice and would like to go back into it one day. Alas, nursing school is challenging and heavy on my time. At least I have a spin class scheduled for January to look forward to between academic classes and clinicals. I hope your karate brings you some additional inner peace, health and pleasure Dr. Barnes.
