Ancestral Diet

Could it be that the food(s) our ancestors ate have healing powers for our bodies?  Do our current frames “remember” the foods eaten by our ancestors through epigenetics or actual DNA “preferences”?  In the same way a person could be genetically predisposed to addiction, could a person be genetically disposed to eating and benefiting from certain foods?

Here is my example:  As a descendant of European immigrants, I truly believe that the food of my relatives:   oatmeal, porridge, “mush” puts me on the pathway to an ideal body weight.  When I start eating oatmeal for breakfast, I slowly shed pounds.

Oatmeal does have a nice impact on cardiovascular health and it does burn slowly in my body and keeps my blood sugar constant.

So tell me about you!  What have you determined?

  1. I’ve been transitioning to a more paleo inspired diet and it really has been transformative! My body responds remarkably well to whole foods! It’s honestly really cool!

  2. I love to cook. I love history. I can’t believe I never really thought about combining the two especially not in regards to epigenetics.

  3. I always tend to loose more weight when I eat more protein rich foods maybe my ancestors ate a lot of protein 🤷‍♀️ I don’t know I do know that I crave a lot of sugar which does the exact opposite and makes me gain weight fast! So in my life I’ve either been a skinny Minnie or I’ve been on the heavy side no in between

  4. A lot of people I workout with swears by oatmeal. I just can’t do the texture of it. I’ve tried it many different ways and the only way I can choke it down is by blending the whole oats in my protein shakes. Very satisfying!

  6. The food these days in time are nothing like what our ancestors ate. For an example; manufacture carbohydrates and process foods.

  7. I definitively agree with this post. I also believe that the amount of unhealthy, processed foods we eat today will greatly affect our future generations.

  8. My ancestors are Arabic. The internet lists: Fish, barley, rice, veggies, and other nice things. However, the food my great aunt brings home resembles nothing of the such. YUCK. Buttt, if I ate the non-processed food of my ancestors, I would be a lot more heart healthy.

  9. The foods our ancestors ate I feel were more organic, not so processed and overall healthier. They didn’t have to TRY to make healthy choices, they just lived in a time were it was healthy. Now everything has GNOM, antibiotic, processed, its harder and more expensive to eat “healthy”.

  10. I feel like perhaps our ancestors knew what foods were the most beneficial so that’s what they chose to eat, and that’s where we get our knowledge of what foods are good for us today. I don’t know if the foods our ancestors ate specifically are more beneficial to a certain person solely based on the fact their ancestors ate a particular food group. I believe it’s probably because they were just aware of what foods improved their health, and taught their descendent what to eat to be healthy as well.

  11. The ancestral aspect might be just coincidence? I feel like the problem lies in the US and the perservatives and ingredients used in common, mass-produced, “commercial” foods. Either way, I think having a cultural, natrual, balanced food like oatmeal is great!

  12. I started to cut out fast foods and limited the times I ate out when February started. Over that month I ate fairly healthy home cooked meals. Hardly any processed foods entered my body. Over the month of February I noticed a two main things that changed with the new eating habit. First thing was I did not feel as sluggish when getting out of bed each morning. Secondly when I decided to eat a fried chicken sandwich it felt like my body was rejecting it. The sandwich along with the fries made my stomach uneasy and I just felt nasty.

  13. I believe that humans are meant to eat fruits ,vegetables, nuts, and fish. All the processed foods are linked to obesity, high cholesterol, high blood pressure, diabetes, and cancer. All those health problems can not be a coincidence. I know junk food taste delicious, but it destroying our health.

  14. I think the foods our ancestors consumed were more natural and better for us. Now days we have a lot of processed products, meat products have added hormones etc. I am native American and my ancestors ate what they hunted, or vegetables that were grown naturally without pesticides etc. I have read the book on the Wheat Belly Diet and the author who is a cardiovascular doctor I believe talks in depth about the foods of our ancestors and that much of them did not have certain diseases. When I would spend time on the reservation with my family they never went to the grocery store much. I found this odd simply because I grew up in the city with my mother. Everything we consumed came directly from the garden or from the cow in the pasture or the chicken running around in the coop or the fish that were once in the stream… although this was odd, the older I became I understood. The food also tasted different, but my grandparents lived to be 98 and very few of my elders had DM or HTN etc. Very interesting indeed

  15. I agree with most people! They do have healing powers. I mean back then our ancestors didn’t have all theses fast food places and junk food. Everything was natural and fresh.

    1. I absolutely agree with your post. Our ancestors grew their food which, was the healthier way instead of all the junk most of us eat now.

    2. Now a days mostly everyone consumes unhealthy processed foods, which results in problems with their body. I believe if you turn to natural foods, those problems will reverse acting as a man made medicine.
